Genoa, 09 October 2011
Genoa International Boat Show confirms itself as one of the world’s most attractive and complete boat shows.
Genoa 51st Boat Show – which was officially opened on Saturday 1 October at Fiera di Genova by the Italian Minister for Transport and Infrastructures, Altero Matteoli - will end tonight. The Show had started off in a very uncertain climate, recording a relatively small number of visitors during the first weekend; the situation, however, gradually improved day after day and the event is now closing with a good turnout of qualified customers professional operators.
A few hours before the end of the Show, the organisers are indeed estimating a final result of 226,000 visitors (-13% compared to 2010).
According to Sara Armella, President of Fiera di Genova SpA, "Genoa Boat Show has confirmed its great attractiveness and remains one of the leading boat shows in the world thanks to its outstanding quality and incredibly wide offer. We believe that the drop in the number of visitors – which we expected and can be considered quite a natural phenomenon - has been compensated for by a series of new features that were immediately appreciated by both the exhibitors and the public. I am referring to, for example, the evening opening on the first day, the "GenovaInBlu" programme, a generally better coordination with the city as a whole, the increase in sports-educational activities for children, and the addition of sections and initiatives aimed at raising the public's awareness, like the exhibition on the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy and the debate "7 moves for Italy". In our capacity as the Show’s organisers, we will have to focus on strengthening these aspects even more in the future, so as to further enhance the quality of the Show”. “Our gratitude and appreciation - added Fiera di Genova SpA's Managing Director Beppe De Simone – goes to all those companies that have once more invested and believed in the Boat Show and that are now able to reap important benefits at a very difficult time”.
“In the light of the current market situation, the presence of 1,300 exhibitors – stated Anton Francesco Albertoni, President of UCINA-Confindustria Nautica – represents an exceptional result, which has exceeded our expectations and has driven away any fears we might have on the eve of the Boat Show. Genoa Boat Show can perhaps represent the Italian industry’s first step towards the turnaround that everyone is hoping for and which seemed to be taking place in the first quarter of 2011. Entrepreneurs kept believing and investing in recovery and presented a huge number of new products at this Boat Show (450 only among boats), particularly as regards medium-size crafts”. Mr Albertoni’s words were echoed by those of Martina Stella, UCINA's General Manager: “This year too the Show has confirmed its important role, not only as an outstanding business opportunity, but also as the ideal stage for debate and dialogue between and among entrepreneurs and the institutions, associations, the financial sector, and professional operators on various subjects – from tax policies influencing international competitiveness to infrastructures and marinas, from business networks to sea culture and vocational training. I would also like to express my deep satisfaction for the success of the first edition of “GenovaInBlu”, an initiative through which UCINA has taken up the challenge of bringing the Show closer to the city and which has allowed us to cast a spotlight on Genoa’s artistic and cultural value”.
In an increasingly internationalised market (80% of the Italian production in the boating industry is targeted at foreign countries) the missions of foreign operators become more and more important for business development: during Genoa 51st Boat Show over 700 b2b meetings took place over four days, involving Italian companies and foreign professionals, mainly from Brazil, China and Russia. A crucial role in this respect was played by Smart 2011, an initiative promoted by Enterprise Europe Network Italia and organised by Unioncamere (the Association of the Liguria Region’s Chambers of Commerce) and La Spezia Chamber of Commerce. Business delegations from Korea, China, Brazil and Norway took part in the meetings.
The Boat Show’s official website www.genoaboatshow.com was visited by 413 thousand Internet users from 184 countries, mainly – besides Italy – from France, Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany and the United States. The Show's Facebook fan page, which was created at the end of August, was accessed by 362 thousand users, many of whom from Great Britain and the US. Over 2,000 journalists representing 27 different countries were accredited by the Boat Show’s Press Office.
The first edition of "GenovaInBlu" was extremely successful: the programme featured 28 cultural, artistic, culinary and fashion events that took place outside the Boat Show thanks to a fruitful cooperation with Genoa Chamber of Commerce and the City Promotion Board and officially started with the lighting of Marco Rotelli’s work of art "Scie di luce in città"(Luminous traces in town), which celebrates the sea by projecting the verses of Genoese poets Montale, Sanguineti and Caproni onto Genoa’s streets and palaces. Theatre Carlo Felice’s orchestra also took part in the events.
As many as six exhibitions were inaugurated only on the first day of "GenovaInBlu" and more than two thousand five hundred guests took part last night on the initiative’s closing night gala, organised by Genoa City Council in Bolzaneto fruit & vegetable market.
Eighty–two side events - conferences, round tables, meetings and presentations - were held at the Sea Theatre, Fieracongressi, the Press Centre, and in the Mezzanine Hall of Pavilion B. UCINA organised five institutional conferences, attended – among others - by the Italian Undersecretary for the Economy and Financial Affairs Alberto Giorgetti, the Chairman of the Italian Senate's Commission for Transport Luigi Grillo, the President of the Italian Council of State Pasquale De Lise, and the Director of the Italian Revenue Agency’s Central Regulatory Department Arturo Betunio. The Genoa International Boating Forum was held for the very first time this year, involving some of the leading players on the international boating market.
Many important institutional representatives visited the Show: from the previously-mentioned Italian Minister for Infrastructures Altero Matteoli to the Minister of the Interior Roberto Maroni (on a private visit), from the Undersecretary for Regulatory Streamlining Francesco Belsito and the Undersecretary for the Environment Giampiero Catone to the Deputy-Chairman of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Rosy Mauro. The financial and business worlds were represented by Gabriele Galateri di Genola (President of Generali), Aldo Bonomi (vice-President of Confidustria, the Confederation of Italian Industries), Roberto Snaidero (the President of Federlegno, the Italian Wood Industry Association), Leonardo Ferragamo and Giovanni Malagò. Prince Laurent of Belgium, the UK Ambassador Christopher Prentice, and the new Consul General of the United States Kyle Scott also visited the Show.
The Boat Show also attracted many VIPs from the Italian show business, sports champions, and representatives of various sports federations, as well as the very special crew of the “I love Barolo” sailing boat that promoted the “7 Mosse per l’Italia” (7 Moves for Italy) project.
Navigar m’è dolce (Sweet sailing), the final stage of a programme including one hundred events promoted by UCINA to spread sea culture, involved almost 3 thousand people during the 9 days of the Show - an incredible number reached also as a result of the special initiatives launched on the second weekend. Most of the participants were children and teenagers who often had to “drag” their parents into trying out sailing and ended up having to "drag them out”, as they were having the time of their life. Eleven Italian Sailing Federation instructors and several Genoa Aquarium biologists and Rescue Association operators formed a fantastic team that managed to involve a huge number of people, proving once more the Boat Show's vital role in attracting the public towards sea culture and sea sports. Among all participants, four were lucky enough to win an Italian Sailing Federation sailing course, while one will be able to attend Yacht Club Italiano Beppe Croce's Sailing School summer camp.
30 thousand Boat Show visitors used the ferry boats that connected the fairground to the Old Port, the Maritime Station, the Airport Marina, and Molo Archetti. The Welcoming Project shuttle buses (made available thanks to the support of the City Promotion Board) carried approximately 55 thousand people, confirming that this service is extremely useful and largely appreciated by both operators and visitors.
The competition with prizes launched by the Boat Show with MSC Crociere was very successful too. The names of the five winners of a cruise for two across the Mediterranean Sea will be announced in the next few days.
